I'm a Cardiologist. Here's Why I Think Everyone Over 40 Needs a Grounding Sheet in 2026. And the 7 I Actually Tested.
Hi, I'm Dr. Rebecca Hart.
Cardiologist · 18 years in practice
For 18 years my job has come down to one thing: reading what the body is doing electrically. The heartbeat is an electrical signal. So is every message the nervous system sends. I measure it every day, and I do not take wellness claims at face value. I test things myself and I track the numbers. This is what a year of testing found, and why I now think a grounding sheet is one of the few things in the wellness aisle that a cardiologist should actually care about.

The electrical connection
Why a Cardiologist Started Looking at Grounding Sheets

Your body is an electrical system, and for almost all of human history that system stayed in balance for one simple reason: we were in constant contact with the ground.
Bare feet on soil. Sleeping on the earth. The ground is an enormous reservoir of free electrons, and being in contact with it keeps the body's charge settled, exactly the way touching a grounded wire settles the charge on anything else. Your body was built assuming that connection was always there.
Then, in the space of a couple of generations, we removed it. Rubber-soled shoes that insulate you from the ground all day. Beds lifted off the floor. Insulated homes wired with electricity in every wall. We now spend the entire day, and the entire night, disconnected from the earth for the first time in human history. So the body holds onto a small electrical charge it was built to discharge, and it sits there, induced by the wiring and screens around you, like static that never leaves.
7.4 V
A typical body carries a few volts of induced charge from the wiring and screens around it
↓ Cortisol
Grounded sleep lowered nighttime cortisol and pulled it back onto its natural rhythm (Ghaly & Teplitz, 2004)
↓ Inflammation
The Earth's free electrons act as antioxidants that neutralise the free radicals driving chronic inflammation (Oschman, Chevalier & Brown, 2015)

As a cardiologist, none of this is a fringe idea to me. Chronic inflammation is one of the root drivers of cardiovascular disease. Cortisol that refuses to fall at night wrecks sleep and pushes blood pressure up. Low heart rate variability, the number I use to read the balance of the nervous system, tracks with worse cardiac outcomes. And grounding has been shown to move every one of those. In a controlled study, sleeping grounded restored the day-night cortisol rhythm and lowered cortisol at night. In another, grounding reduced blood viscosity, which Dr. Stephen Sinatra and his colleagues called a major and overlooked factor in cardiovascular disease. Even a single short session raised heart rate variability. This is not a new-age product to me. It is a way to drain a charge the body was never meant to hold, and the downstream effects land squarely in my specialty.
Before I go any further: no sheet replaces the foundation. Good sleep habits, exercise and managing stress come first, and I do all three. But if modern life keeps your body charged, wired and inflamed through the night, reconnecting it to the earth while you sleep is not a gimmick. It is the piece almost everyone over 40 is missing.

Why the usual options fall short
The Fixes Everyone Over 40 Has Already Tried

Here is the problem, and I see it in my clinic every week. After 40, the body stops managing this on its own. Cortisol stops falling at night the way it should, so you fall asleep fine and then wake up at 3am, wired, and cannot get back to sleep. Inflammation rises. Heart rate variability declines. Blood pressure creeps up.
And by now, most of my patients over 40 have already tried the whole modern list of sleep supplements. Magnesium glycinate. Glycine. L-theanine. Apigenin. Ashwagandha. An Oura ring reading a score every morning. I have patients who have worked through 15 different products. And almost all of them tell me the same sentence, nearly word for word: I fall asleep okay now, but I still wake at 3am and lie there for an hour.
Here is why none of it keeps you asleep.
Magnesium glycinate
is the one that actually does something, and I recommend it. It relaxes the muscles and the nervous system enough to help you fall asleep. But it is topping up a mineral most people are low in, nothing more. Plenty of people find it stops working after 2 weeks, and a surprising number find it starts waking them at 3am itself. It helps you fall asleep. It does nothing to keep you asleep.
Glycine, L-theanine and apigenin
are the rest of what people over 40 are now taking, and they do one job: they quiet a racing mind long enough to fall asleep. Apigenin in particular is everywhere right now off the back of one podcast, with almost no human trials behind it at these doses. Even taken at their best, not one of them does a single thing about the cortisol that rises at 3am and wakes you up.
Ashwagandha
lowers stress, and if stress is what keeps you up it can help you drift off. But it works during the day, and it does nothing to keep you asleep through the second half of the night.
Melatonin
is the one almost everyone tried first and quietly gave up on. Your body builds tolerance, slows its own production, and it was never designed to keep you asleep, only to nudge a shifted body clock. For the 3am wake-up it does nothing.
The tracker is not even a fix. It shows you, in detail, that you woke at 3am, and then the bad score becomes one more thing to lie there worrying about. A tracker has never fixed a single night.
Now look at what every one of these has in common. They are all aimed at the same thing: getting you to sleep. Not one of them touches staying asleep, because staying asleep is not a busy-mind problem, it is a cortisol and nervous-system problem. Your body has to wind down at night and stay that way. And that is the one thing a night of grounding has been shown, in a controlled study, to change: sleeping grounded dropped nighttime cortisol and pulled it back onto its normal curve, so it falls at night the way it is supposed to. That is the 3am wake-up, addressed at the root instead of the surface.
So I did what I do. I bought the 7 top-selling grounding sheets online, the brands you have seen on Facebook, and tested every one with the same multimeter over the year. Most of them use only 5% to 10% silver, and silver oxidises the moment it meets sweat and detergent, so the thin threads corrode through in a handful of washes. The winner was the one brand I had never heard of. Here is how all 7 held up.
Testing protocol
How I Tested
12 months total. Weeks on each sheet, because the body and the nervous system need time to respond. A few nights tells you nothing.
A multimeter on every sheet. I measured whether the silver still conducted, and whether lying on it dropped my own body voltage from a few volts down to near zero. Then I washed each one 10, 25 and 50 times and measured again, because most sheets tarnish and quietly stop conducting while still looking new on the bed.
Nightly tracking. Resting heart rate, morning heart rate variability, total sleep, how often I woke, and morning stiffness. Real numbers over months, not a good night here and there.
Cost per night. A sheet lasts years, so I worked out what each one actually costs you a night once you account for how long it keeps working.
My non-negotiables:
➜ Silver woven through the fabric, not sprayed on as a coating that rinses off
➜ Enough silver to survive years of washing, not a token amount
➜ Genuine organic cotton, not a plastic sheet you sweat against
➜ An independent wash test with a published figure behind it, not a marketing claim
➜ A grounding cord with a safety resistor built in, not a bare wire that can overheat

Testing protocol
My Top 7, Ranked
These 7 were the most-bought grounding products I could find, the brands you have seen on Facebook, and I tested every one with the same multimeter over the year. 6 of them had stopped working within a month, one way or another. One was still reading the same a full year and 500 washes later as it did on day one. Here they are, the winner first, then the other 6 from best to worst.
🥇 Best Overall · #1 Pick
★★★★★ 4.8 / 5

Grounding of Sweden
25% woven-silver sheet, 500-thread organic cotton
$89 (from $199)
The only sheet that read the same after 500 washes on the multimeter as it did out of the box, and the only one that was never a brand I had heard of. It comes from a Swedish company founded by a textile engineer who spent 14 years developing conductive medical fabrics, which is the whole reason it is built the way it is.
Here is what it does that the other 6 cannot.
25% pure silver, woven through every thread of 500-thread-count organic cotton. That is 5 times the silver of GroundingWell's 5%, and 2.5 times the most expensive Terra sheet's 10%. And here is why that number is the one that decides everything. Silver oxidises the moment it meets the sweat and detergent of real washing. At 5% the threads are so thin the oxidation eats through them in 4 washes; at 10% it takes a couple of weeks longer. At 25%, the silver threads are thick enough that the grey tarnish only forms on the outside of each thread and never reaches the silver at the core, so the core keeps conducting, the same way a thick copper wire lasts for decades outdoors while a thin one corrodes through in a month.
What I love
What could be better
My experience
Two numbers I care about clinically moved, and they are the reason I am writing this. Inside the first 2 weeks my morning heart rate variability trended up and my resting heart rate settled a few beats lower, and I stopped waking at 3am. By week 4 I was sleeping through and waking without the morning stiffness I had written off as age. I am paid to be sceptical of exactly this, and it was the multimeter and the morning numbers that convinced me, not a feeling.
Bottom line: The only one of the 7 still conducting after 500 washes. 5 times the silver of the cheapest sheet, woven not sprayed, the only published wash test, a lifetime warranty, and the only one that grounds you through what you actually wear and sleep under.

The Grounding Co
10% woven-silver sheet
$189
The best of the 6 that failed, and it still stopped conducting after 8 washes. It uses 10% woven silver, twice what GroundingWell puts in, and that is the only reason it lasted twice as long.
What I love
What could be better
My experience
I washed it exactly the way I washed the others. It dropped my body voltage to near zero for the first few washes, then the reading started climbing back up, and by wash 8 it could not pull my voltage down at all. Twice the silver of the cheapest sheet bought me twice the washes. Neither is close to enough.
Bottom line: The best of the rest still stopped conducting by wash 8. Twice the silver of GroundingWell, still less than half the winner's, and no longer working inside two months.

Earthing Harmony
10% woven-silver sheet

10% woven silver, and it did not fail the way the others did. The silver was the least of its problems. Its grounding cord had no safety resistor in it, and that is not a small thing.
What I love
What could be better
My experience
This is the only one that actually worried me. A proper grounding cord has a resistor built into it, usually around 100,000 ohms, there to hold the current back if the outlet is miswired or a surge comes through. This one had none. The first surge that came through had nothing to stop it, the cord overheated and burned out inside 2 weeks, and a grounding cord that has fried does nothing for you, if it has not already put you at risk.
Bottom line: 10% silver undone by a grounding cord with no safety resistor. That is a shock and fire risk, not a quirk. It burned out in 2 weeks, the replacement is not covered, and even if the cord had held, the silver is half the winner's.

The cheapest of the lot, and the least silver in it. 5% woven silver for $99, and it stopped conducting after 4 washes.
What I love
What could be better
My experience
4 washes. That is all it took. When I looked closely, the silver had gone grey in patches, exactly where the sweat hits the sheet each night. It felt identical to day one. Only the multimeter showed it had stopped conducting.
Bottom line: 5% is the least silver on the market and it shows, it stopped conducting after 4 washes. Cheap up front, and you are buying it again inside the month.

The worst construction in the test. The silver is not even woven into the thread. It is sprayed onto the surface as a coating, and the coating started flaking off by wash 3.
What I love
What could be better
My experience
This is the one that made me angry. After a couple of washes the "silver" flaked off like cheap paint, and by wash 12 it no longer pulled my body voltage down at all. A sprayed coating cannot survive a washing machine, and nothing about the way it is sold changes that.
Bottom line: The silver is sprayed on, not woven in. It flakes off in the wash and the sheet stops conducting by wash 12. The opposite of the winner: sprayed on instead of woven in.

Premium Grounding
Stainless steel fiber sheet
$194
The steel sheet, and its whole pitch is one line: steel does not tarnish like silver, so it lasts forever. It is the cleverest trap here, because that line is half true, and the half that is false is the half that matters.
What I love
What could be better
My experience
On bare skin the readings were patchy, some spots barely moving the multimeter reading, because there is so little conductive material in it, and steel is a poor conductor to begin with. Under a fitted sheet, the way the brand tells you to use it, it grounded me not at all. And the promise it is sold on is the tell: within weeks mine had rust spots where I sweat most.
Bottom line: The one sheet that claims to beat silver on lasting, and it loses on both counts. The cheap steel rusts from your sweat, and even brand new it conducts 30 times worse than the winner's silver. A stiff polyester sheet that barely grounds you and cannot reach you through a sheet on top.

I tested the cover bare and it grounded me fine. Then I put a normal fitted sheet on top, the way anyone would make a bed, and the reading dropped to zero. The plastic is too weak a conductor to reach you through cotton. And it gives off that new-plastic chemical smell every night.

The conclusions
What I Learned After 12 Months
I went in expecting one of the names I recognised to win. Not one of them did. The moment I put a multimeter on every sheet and washed them like real bedding, the results made the order obvious, and it was not close.
01.
The charge in your body is real, and so is draining it. This is not "negative energy." Your body holds a measurable voltage, and a working sheet drops it to near zero while you sleep. The cortisol, the inflammation and the heart rate variability findings all follow from that one physical fact.
02.
Almost every sheet had stopped conducting before the return window closed. 5% silver stopped after 4 washes, 10% after 8, and Terra's sprayed coating flaked off by wash 3. Even the steel sheet, sold on the promise that it never tarnishes, rusted from my sweat. The sheet looks brand new the whole time, so you never find out. Only 25% woven silver was still conducting at wash 500, and only one brand publishes the test.
03.
Everything people already use is aimed at falling asleep. Magnesium, glycine, theanine, apigenin, ashwagandha, melatonin, a tracker. Every one of them works, or fails, at the front of the night. Not one addresses the charged, high-cortisol state that wakes you up at 3am, which is the exact thing grounding is shown to change.
04.
The best sheet was not the most famous one. Grounding of Sweden was a brand I had never heard of. When I tested it against every name I knew, it carried more silver, lasted longer, backed it up with a lab test, and cost the least per night. The biggest marketing budget almost never makes the best product.
The final verdict
Final Recommendations
Best overall, and the only one I would actually buy
Grounding of Sweden.
The most silver, the only independent wash test, still working like new a full year and 500 washes later, and the lowest cost per night. If you want one sheet that keeps doing its job, this is the one to buy.
The rest
LOWEST SILVER CONTENT
GroundingWell
Its 5% silver construction stopped conducting after just 4 washes.
BEST OF THE REST
The Grounding Co.
With 10% woven silver, it lasted longer than most competitors—but it still stopped conducting after only 8 washes.
SPRAYED-SILVER OPTION
Terra
Sprayed its silver on as a coating that flaked off and stopped by wash 12.
BIGGEST SAFETY CONCERN
Earthing Harmony
Its grounding cord had no safety resistor and burned out within 2 weeks, creating a genuine shock and overheating risk.
STEEL-FIBER OPTION
Premium Grounding
The steel one sold as rust-proof, rusted from my sweat and conducts 30 times worse than silver even new.
PLASTIC COVER OPTION
Down to Ground
This is a plastic cover that cannot ground you through a single sheet.
Not one of them kept working past a month.

25% woven-silver sheet, 500-thread organic cotton

4 washes. That is all it took. When I looked closely, the silver had gone grey in patches, exactly where the sweat hits the sheet each night. It felt identical to day one. Only the multimeter showed it had stopped conducting.

Bottom line: $179 to sleep on crinkling plastic that off-gasses, or to cover it and get zero grounding. It is the most expensive way I found to buy nothing.

The rest
GroundingWell (5% silver) stopped conducting after 4 washes, The Grounding Co (10%) after 8, and Terra sprayed its silver on as a coating that flaked off and stopped by wash 12. Earthing Harmony's grounding cord had no safety resistor and burned out in 2 weeks, a genuine shock risk. Premium Grounding, the steel one sold as rust-proof, rusted from my sweat and conducts 30 times worse than silver even new. Down to Ground is a plastic cover that cannot ground you through a single sheet. Not one of them kept working past a month.

A Cardiologist's Report

↑ HRV
Short grounding sessions raised heart rate variability, the measure of nervous-system balance cardiologists watch (Chevalier, 2010)
Study: The Biologic Effects of Grounding the Human Body During Sleep. Ghaly & Teplitz
(2004), Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. View study →

Construction at a glance
25% woven silver · 500-thread-count organic cotton · 100,000-ohm safety resistor · independent 500-wash conductivity test · lifetime conductivity warranty

$129

GroundingWell
5% woven-silver sheet
$99
The cheapest of the lot, and the least silver in it. 5% woven silver for $99, and it stopped conducting after 4 washes.
What I love
What could be better
My experience
4 washes. That is all it took. When I looked closely, the silver had gone grey in patches, exactly where the sweat hits the sheet each night. It felt identical to day one. Only the multimeter showed it had stopped conducting.
Bottom line: 5% is the least silver on the market and it shows, it stopped conducting after 4 washes. Cheap up front, and you are buying it again inside the month.

Terra
10% sprayed-silver sheet
$149

Down to Ground
Plastic grounding mattress cover
$179
Not a sheet at all. It is a plastic mattress cover, the soft kind shower curtains are made of, that goes under your fitted sheet, $179, and its own product page tells you not to put a sheet on top or the grounding stops.
What I love
What could be better
My experience
I tested the cover bare and it grounded me fine. Then I put a normal fitted sheet on top, the way anyone would make a bed, and the reading dropped to zero. The plastic is too weak a conductor to reach you through cotton. And it gives off that new-plastic chemical smell every night.
Bottom line: $179 to sleep on crinkling plastic that off-gasses, or to cover it and get zero grounding. It is the most expensive way I found to buy nothing.

Best overall, and the only one I would actually buy
